چکیده

The Red Queen Effect is an evolutionary hypothesis [1]. This evolutionary concept is named for the Red Queen ́s comment to Alice in Through the Looking Glass that “it takes all the running you can do, to stay in the same place”. It posits that multicellular organisms with long life cycles must constantly change, adaptation process driven by the changing conditions of the environment, in order to survive the onslaught of potentially lethal pathogens which have much shorter life cycles and can thus evolve orders of magnitude faster.

Coralline red algae from the Lower Pliocene Shagra Formation of Wadi Wizer, Red Sea coast, Egypt: Biofacies analysis, systematics and palaeoenvironmental implications

Coralline red algae are highly abunadant and well diversified in the well exposed carbonate deposits of the Lower Pliocene Shagra Formation at Wadi Wizer, Red Sea coast, Egypt. Lithostratigraphically, the Shagra Formation unconformably overlies the Late Miocene Marsa Alam Formation and underlies the Quaternary deposits. This carbonate facies is dominated by different assemblage of coralline red...

Simple and Rapid Quality Control of Sulfated Glycans by a Fluorescence Sensor Assay—Exemplarily Developed for the Sulfated Polysaccharides from Red Algae Delesseria sanguinea

Sulfated polysaccharides (SP) from algae are of great interest due to their manifold biological activities. Obstacles to commercial (especially medical) application include considerable variability and complex chemical composition making the analysis and the quality control challenging. The aim of this study was to evaluate a simple microplate assay for screening the quality of SP. It is based ...

Sulfated Seaweed Polysaccharides as Multifunctional Materials in Drug Delivery Applications.

In the last decades, the discovery of metabolites from marine resources showing biological activity has increased significantly. Among marine resources, seaweed is a valuable source of structurally diverse bioactive compounds. The cell walls of marine algae are rich in sulfated polysaccharides, including carrageenan in red algae, ulvan in green algae and fucoidan in brown algae. Sulfated polysa...

Polysaccharides of the red algae “Pterocladia” growing on the Lebanese coast: Isolation, structural features with antioxidant and anticoagulant activities

Article history: Received on: 25/09/2012 Revised on: 10/10/2012 Accepted on: 19/10/2012 Available online: 28/10/2012 In addition to their high nutritional value, red algae are of great interest as a source of therapeutic substances. However, despite their abundance on the Lebanese coast red algae have never been studied before. Therefore, we attempted to study among the available biomass one of...

Structure, biology, evolution, and medical importance of sulfated fucans and galactans.

Sulfated fucans and galactans are strongly anionic polysaccharides found in marine organisms. Their structures vary among species, but their major features are conserved among phyla. Sulfated fucans are found in marine brown algae and echinoderms, whereas sulfated galactans occur in red and green algae, marine angiosperms, tunicates (ascidians), and sea urchins. Polysaccharides with 3-linked, b...
